Why major weight loss can change the scope of your bridal alterations
I have been fitting brides for 42 years, and in that time I have seen every weight loss trend walk through my door. I fitted brides during the fen phen era. I fitted brides using weight loss devices, brides recovering from surgery, and brides whose bodies changed in ways no one planned. Today we are in the era of GLP-1 medications and others that work like them. Here is what I have learned: when a bride is on one of these medications, her body may be changing the whole time we are working on her gown.
“But I’m Not Trying to Lose Weight”
I hear this often, and I believe it. Many brides tell me they have been on their medication for a while, they are not actively trying to lose, and it won’t make a difference. I truly believe they mean every word.
Then they come back for their next fitting, a month or two later, and the gown is 2, 4, 6, sometimes 8 inches larger than it was the last time I saw them. The bride is shocked. She did not see it coming, and I understand why. Inches leave quietly. A gown measures them out loud.
We Sew to the Body You Bring Us
At your first fitting, we pin your gown to the exact body standing on our platform that day. Then we take it to the workroom and sew it to that body. Every seam, every dart, every adjustment is built around those measurements.
If you come back and your body has changed, what we pinned the first time can no longer work. It’s like moving the walls while we are building your house. It is not a good plan for anyone.
What Happens When the Body Moves
When a gown no longer fits the body it was altered for, everyone feels it.
The bride feels it most. She is stressed and confused, and often heartbroken, because she believes she did everything right and her dress still doesn’t fit.
My workroom feels it too. Work we already completed now has to be redone, sometimes two, three, or four times.
And the brides behind her feel it. Every alteration plan has a completion date, and every bride has paid for her place on our schedule. When one gown has to start over, we can’t take time from someone else’s slot to do it. We always have to keep moving forward.
So, when a bride’s body has changed significantly, her gown may have to go back in line. And if there isn’t enough time before the wedding, the choices get hard. She may have to wear the gown as it is or make a different decision about the dress altogether. That is never the conversation I want to have with a bride.
A Story with a Happy Ending
I had a bride come in whose gown fit almost perfectly. She needed a bustle and the front of the bodice taken in a little closer to her chest. That was all. With so little work, she could have nearly taken it home the same day.
Before her next appointment, she called me. She had been going through some health challenges that caused her to lose a lot of weight and inches. She had no intention of losing weight. Life simply had a different plan.
I asked her to wait and come back two weeks before her wedding, and I told her we would not touch her gown until she tried it on again. I wanted to fit the body she would walk down the aisle in.
When she came in, her gown was 7 inches too large. Getting that done in two weeks was a big task, but she was our bride, and I wanted her to go down that aisle looking snatched, just the way she loved it.
One week before her wedding, she came to pick up her gown. She tried it on, and it fit perfectly. She was in tears. She told me she had been afraid she would keep losing and end up wearing a gown that was too big on her wedding day. Instead, she walked down the aisle beautifully. She is married and happy, and I could not be prouder.
That story ended well for one reason: she told me what was happening before we did the work.
All I Ask Is That You Tell Me
Whatever the reason your body might change, whether it’s medication, a health matter, a fitness goal, or a plan to enhance or reduce, I want to support you. You deserve to look very good on your wedding day.
All I ask is that I know about it. When I know your plan, I can place you in the right part of our schedule, so we fit your gown when your body is ready instead of fitting it again.
Here is how you can help us help you:
- Tell us at your consultation if you are taking a GLP-1 or any medication that may affect your weight, even if you don’t expect it to make a difference.
- Share any weight loss, fitness, or body goals you have before the wedding, big or small.
- Call us right away if you notice your body changing between fittings, before your appointment rather than after.
- Let us plan your fitting schedule around your goals, so your final fitting reflects the body you will wear on your wedding day.
A Moment Frozen in Time
My goal is for every Margo West bride to walk down the aisle looking better than she has ever looked in her entire life. That look will freeze in time, in every photo and every memory, and we want it to be perfect. When we plan together, we can make that happen.
If you’re planning your wedding gown and want to talk honestly about your fitness, your timeline, and your goals, I would love to meet you. Book your consultation here.
With love,
Margo
