A custom wedding gown is one of the most personal garments a person will ever own. Nothing is borrowed from another design, nothing is altered from someone else’s pattern. Every element is designed around one body, one aesthetic, and one vision. This is what Margo West has been doing for forty years in Dallas.
If you are considering a custom gown and want to understand what the process actually involves, this guide will tell you exactly what to expect.
The Design Consultation
Every custom gown begins with a design consultation. This is a dedicated appointment where we discuss your vision, your body, your wedding aesthetic, and the practical requirements of your day. We look at inspiration images, discuss silhouettes, talk about fabric families, and begin to define what your gown is going to be.
This conversation is not a formality. It is the foundation of everything that follows. The more clearly we understand what you want, and what you do not want, the better the design process goes. We ask questions that sometimes surprise brides: How do you want to feel when you walk into the room? What do you want your groom to see? What is the one thing you absolutely must have, and the one thing you cannot tolerate? These questions matter.
Fabric Selection
After the design consultation, we select fabrics. This is a creative process but also a technical one. Certain designs require certain fabrics. A structured bodice needs a fabric with body. A soft, draped skirt needs fabric with the right drape and weight. The lace you love may not behave the way you expect when constructed, and we will tell you that before you fall in love with the plan.
We source from couture-quality suppliers. This matters. The difference between couture-grade silk and mass-market satin is visible in person and even more visible in photographs. Your custom gown will be made from materials that justify the investment.

Pattern and Muslin
Before any final fabric is cut, we create a pattern specific to your measurements and a muslin. A muslin is a test garment made in inexpensive cotton that allows us to refine the fit, the silhouette, and any structural details before the real fabric is touched. This step is non-negotiable for custom work. It protects both your investment and the integrity of the design.
The muslin fitting is often the most important appointment in the process. It is when the design moves from paper to three dimensions. Adjustments made at the muslin stage are easy. The same adjustments after the final fabric has been cut are not.
Construction
Once the muslin is approved, construction begins. The timeline from this point to a finished gown is typically 8-16 weeks depending on complexity. Highly embellished gowns, gowns with extensive hand-beading or lace application, and gowns with multiple complex structural elements take longer. Simple, clean designs in straightforward fabrics move faster.
During construction, you will have 2-3 in-progress fittings where we assess the gown as it is being built. These fittings allow us to catch and correct anything that needs adjustment before the gown is complete.
Final Fittings
The final 2-3 fittings happen after construction is complete. These are the fittings where we refine the last details: the hem length at your actual shoe height, the final closure fit, the bustle if applicable, any last adjustments to how the gown hangs. By the final fitting, you should be wearing the gown and feeling nothing but right in it.
“A custom gown is not about making something impressive. It is about making something that is exactly and completely you. That is the entire project.”
Timeline and Investment
A realistic timeline for a custom Margo West gown is 9-12 months from initial consultation to final fitting. This allows for the design process, fabric sourcing, pattern development, construction, and multiple fitting appointments without pressure. Brides who come to us 6 months before their wedding for a custom gown are possible, but the process is compressed and requires a highly disciplined schedule.
Custom gown pricing at Margo West begins at $4,000 and scales with complexity, fabric selection, and embellishment. This investment reflects genuine couture-quality construction, hand finishing, and the time required to make a garment that fits only you.
