A bridal consultation at Margo West is a working appointment, not a sales meeting. We will look at your gown, assess its construction, discuss what is possible, and give you a complete picture of what alterations or design additions would involve before you commit to anything. Here is how to prepare to get the most from that time.
What to Bring
- Your gown. This sounds obvious, but we mention it because brides occasionally arrive without the gown, expecting to discuss hypotheticals. We cannot accurately assess what is possible without the actual garment in hand.
- Your wedding-day undergarments. The bra, bustier, or shapewear you plan to wear matters to how the gown fits. A strapless bra, a longline corset, and no undergarment all affect the fit differently. Bring what you will actually wear.
- Your shoes. Heel height determines the hem length required. If you are still deciding between two heel heights, bring both. This is not a minor detail.
- Inspiration images. If you have a specific alteration or design addition in mind, a photo of what you are envisioning helps us understand your reference point and communicate accurately about whether and how it can be achieved.
- A clear schedule. Block 60-90 minutes for a thorough initial consultation. Arriving rushed limits what we can accomplish.
What to Expect at the Appointment
We will begin by having you put on the gown so we can see it on your body. We assess the fit across multiple points: bust, waist, hip, shoulder width, shoulder height, length, and back closure. We note where the gown works and where it does not. We listen to what is bothering you about the current fit, if anything.
Then we discuss what alterations or additions would address your concerns, what the process would involve (number of fittings, timeline, complexity), and what it would cost. We give you a complete quote at the consultation. There are no surprises later.

Questions Worth Asking
Come prepared with questions. The most useful ones at an initial consultation are:
- What alterations are required to make this gown fit correctly, and which are optional?
- What is the complete cost and timeline for the work we have discussed?
- Are there any aspects of this gown that limit what alterations are possible?
- How many fittings will I need, and when should they be scheduled?
- What do you recommend regarding the bustle for this train style?
- Are there any design additions that would enhance this gown that I have not considered?
“The best consultation conversations are the honest ones. Tell us what you love about the gown, what you wish were different, and what your ideal outcome looks like. We will tell you exactly what is possible.”
If You Are Considering Multiple Studios
It is entirely reasonable to consult with multiple alteration studios before deciding where to have your gown worked on. If you are doing this, bring the same gown and ask the same questions at each appointment. The quality of the consultation, the specificity of the assessment, and the completeness of the quote are all data points in that comparison.
Things to evaluate: Does the studio assess the gown thoroughly in person, or do they quote without seeing it? Are they willing to discuss the limits of what they can do, or do they agree to everything? Do they have examples of work at the complexity level you require?
