What to Bring to Your Consultation

Your Gown

Bring the gown you’d like worked on. In its bag if you have one. The consultation can’t happen without seeing the actual gown. We assess fabric, fit, embellishments, and condition in person.

Your Wedding Shoes

Hemming can’t be accurately pinned without your exact wedding shoes. Bring the shoes you plan to wear on your wedding day, including any shoe inserts or lifts you typically use.

Your Inspiration

Photos, Pinterest boards, fabric samples. Anything that communicates what you’re imagining. For custom gown consultations, the more reference material you bring, the more productive the session will be.

What to Expect

Your First Appointment
at Margo West

The consultation is where everything begins. You'll arrive at our Dallas Design District studio a private, appointment-only atelier at 1403 Slocum Street. And sit down with Margo or Lisa directly. There's no receptionist, no sales pressure, no rushing you to a decision. Just two women with 40+ years of couture experience listening to what you want.

If you're coming in for bridal alterations, bring the dress. We'll put it on you, assess the fit, and talk through exactly what needs to happen. Not just the basics, but every detail, from how the fabric drapes when you walk to how the bustle will look at your reception. We take full measurements and give you a clear, written scope of work before you leave.

If you're exploring a custom bespoke gown, bring inspiration. Tear sheets, photos, Pinterest boards, even a vague sense of what you love. All of it is useful. We'll sketch concepts on the spot, talk through silhouette, fabric, and construction options, and help you understand exactly what your vision requires in terms of timeline and investment.

The $100 consultation deposit is applied directly toward your total. It simply ensures we're both committed to the conversation. It's not a fee. It's the beginning of a working relationship.

"Come in. Tell me your vision. I'll do the rest."

How to Prepare for Your Consultation

You don't need to arrive with everything figured out. But the more context you can bring, the more productive your first appointment will be. Here's what helps:

  • Your wedding date (or anticipated date range)
  • The gown itself, if alterations are the goal. And the shoes you plan to wear
  • Photos of looks you love, even if they're from completely different gowns
  • A sense of your undergarments. Strapless bra, shapewear, corset. Since this affects fit
  • Any specific concerns: a bustline that doesn't sit right, a waist that gaps, straps that won't stay
  • An open mind. We often see solutions brides haven't considered

We serve brides from across the Dallas–Fort Worth area, including Plano, Frisco, Allen, McKinney, Southlake, and Fort Worth. Most brides tell us the drive was more than worth it. We'd like to show you why.

What to Expect

Your Consultation,
Step by Step

Step 1. You Arrive with Your Gown

Bring your gown, your wedding shoes, and any undergarments or shapewear you plan to wear on the day. If you have design inspiration photos, bring those too. We work best with a clear visual reference for what you’re imagining. Even rough screenshots from Pinterest or Instagram help us understand your vision faster than description alone.

Step 2. We Assess Your Gown Together

You put the gown on, and Margo West evaluates it with you in the mirror. We look at fit across the bodice, waist, and hips. We assess the hem length with your shoes. We discuss what is and isn’t working, and we talk through every change you want to make. Both structural alterations and any design additions. Nothing is committed to yet; this is a conversation.

Step 3. We Provide a Detailed Quote

After the assessment, we provide a quote for the full scope of work. The quote covers all alterations and design additions discussed. There are no surprise fees added later. If the scope changes at a subsequent fitting. Because you decide to add a bustle, or the fit requires more work than initially visible. We discuss and agree before proceeding. Transparency is the standard here.

Step 4. We Schedule Your Fittings

Once you approve the quote, we schedule your fitting appointments. Most brides need between two and four fittings. For complex alterations or design additions, the fitting schedule may extend over three to five months. We build your timeline around your wedding date and give you a clear picture of when each appointment will happen.

About the $100 Consultation Deposit

All appointments at Margo West require a $100 deposit to book. This deposit is not a fee. It is applied directly to your total alteration balance. It ensures that your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you, and that we can give your consultation the full, undivided attention it deserves.

To schedule, call us at (972) 918-9750 or request an appointment via our contact page. We confirm all appointments within 24 business hours.

Common Questions

Before You Book

As early as you have your gown in hand. For complex alterations or custom design additions, six months before the wedding is ideal. For standard alterations, four months is a comfortable starting point. If your wedding is sooner than that, contact us immediately. We sometimes accommodate rush timelines depending on our current schedule.

Yes, you are welcome to bring one or two trusted people. A mother, sister, or close friend whose opinion you value. We ask that the group stays small so the appointment remains focused on you and your gown. More than two guests can make the consultation feel like a group opinion session rather than a personal fitting, and the goal is to understand your vision. Not to facilitate a committee decision.

Yes. We work with gowns from any source. Boutique purchases, designer originals, off-the-rack gowns, online orders, heirloom pieces, and gowns purchased secondhand. Our standard of craftsmanship does not change based on where the dress came from. What matters is what the gown needs and what you envision for the finished result.
