We answer questions every day at Margo West. Some come from brides who have just started their search. Some come from brides who are weeks from their wedding. Here are the questions we hear most often, answered as clearly and directly as we can.
How far in advance should I start bridal alterations?
For standard alterations, 3-4 months before your wedding date. For custom design additions (sleeves, trains, structural modifications), 5-6 months. For custom gown design from scratch, 9-12 months. These timelines allow for multiple fittings, sourcing of materials if needed, and a buffer for any unexpected complications. Do not wait until 6 weeks before your wedding to begin alterations. It creates unnecessary stress and limits what we can do.
How much do wedding dress alterations cost in Dallas?
Simple alterations (hem, taking in a seam) typically run $150-$400. Standard alterations (multiple seams, zipper replacement, basic bustle) run $400-$800. Complex alterations or design additions (sleeves, significant restructuring, beaded fabric work) run $800-$2,000+. Cost is driven by time, fabric complexity, and embellishment. We provide a complete quote at the initial consultation after assessing your gown in person.
How many fittings will I need?
Most brides at Margo West have 3-5 fittings for standard alterations. More fittings are required for complex modifications or custom gown work. The first fitting establishes the alterations needed. Subsequent fittings refine the fit until the gown is exactly right. The final fitting happens 4-6 weeks before the wedding when your weight is likely to be stable and you can confirm the final state of the gown.

Can you add sleeves to my existing gown?
In most cases, yes. The feasibility depends on your gown’s bodice construction. Structured bodices with clean shoulder edges provide the best attachment points for sleeves. We assess every gown individually at the consultation before committing to a design plan. We never attempt additions that we cannot execute to a couture standard. Cap sleeves, illusion sleeves, and off-shoulder additions are the most common additions we make to existing gowns.
What should I bring to my first fitting?
Bring your gown, the undergarments you plan to wear on your wedding day (including your bra or bustier, shapewear if any, and underslip), and the shoes you will wear. Heel height affects hem length, so wearing the actual shoes matters. If you have inspiration photos of the alterations or design additions you want, bring those as well. Come with an idea of what is bothering you about the fit, if anything, so we can address it efficiently.
Do you work on vintage or heirloom gowns?
Yes. Heirloom and vintage gown restoration is one of our specialties at Margo West. Older gowns require careful assessment because the fabrics may be more fragile than they appear, and original construction methods may differ from modern practices. We assess every heirloom gown before committing to a restoration plan. Read our detailed heirloom restoration guide for more.
How does wedding dress preservation work?
Professional preservation involves cleaning the gown to remove all stains and oxidation risks, then packaging it in acid-free materials in a sealed, archival-quality box. This process stabilizes the fabric against yellowing and deterioration. The sooner preservation begins after the wedding, the better the results. Stains that appear invisible immediately after a wedding often become visible as fabric oxidizes over months or years. Our preservation service at Margo West is available immediately after your wedding day.
