The Biggest Bridal Decisions: A Practical Guide for Dallas Brides

By Margo West · August 1, 2023 · 3 min read

Every bride faces a version of the same set of decisions. Some of them are genuinely difficult. Some that feel difficult are actually straightforward once you understand the framework. And a few are so frequently overthought that they deserve an honest simplification.

This guide is our attempt to help Dallas brides make the biggest bridal decisions with clarity and confidence.

The Gown: New, Pre-Owned, or Heirloom?

The decision between purchasing a new gown, buying pre-owned, or wearing a family heirloom is deeply personal, but the practical factors are worth understanding clearly.

New from a boutique: The widest selection, the ability to order in your size range, and typically the longest lead time. Budget range in Dallas runs from under $1,000 for sample sales to $10,000+ for couture lines. Allow 6-9 months for the dress to arrive before alterations begin.

Pre-owned or sample: Significant cost savings. Often a near-mint gown at 40-60% of original retail. The trade-off is that you buy what exists in the size that is available. Alterations can address sizing differences, but there are limits. A gown that is more than two sizes too large in the bodice is difficult to alter successfully. Work with a skilled alteration studio to assess feasibility before you purchase.

Heirloom: Carries unique sentimental value that cannot be replicated. May require restoration, significant alteration, or both. Older gowns often use fabrics that are more fragile than their appearance suggests. At Margo West, we assess heirloom gowns carefully before committing to a restoration plan. When to Schedule Your First Alteration Appointment

This is the decision we see brides get wrong most often, in both directions. Scheduling too early (more than 6 months before a wedding where significant weight change is expected) means fittings may need to be redone. Scheduling too late (less than 6 weeks before the wedding) means there is no buffer for unexpected complications.

The sweet spot for most brides: first fitting 3-4 months before the wedding. Final fitting 4-6 weeks before. This timeline allows multiple fittings, accommodates any complications, and still leaves room for minor last-minute adjustments.

Alterations vs. Buying Closer to Your Size

Many brides purchase gowns knowing they will need alterations. This is entirely normal. Bridal sizing runs small and is based on measurements rather than clothing sizes. A size 10 in bridal may fit a woman who wears a size 6 in ready-to-wear. This is expected, not a problem.

What matters is understanding the limits of alteration. A gown can be taken in significantly at most seams. It can be let out only as far as the seam allowance permits, which is typically 1 to 1.5 inches per seam. Length can be shortened; adding length is more complex and fabric-dependent. Boning and structure can be modified, but at increasing complexity and cost.

Should You Get a Bustle?

If your gown has a train that extends beyond 18 inches, yes. A bustle lifts and secures the train so you can move freely during the reception without stepping on the back of your own gown. There are multiple bustle styles. The American bustle (fabric looped up underneath), the French bustle (fabric anchored in multiple points), and the ballroom bustle (fabric gathered at the center back). Which is right for your gown depends on the train length, weight, and fabric construction. We will assess this at your fitting and recommend the most appropriate option.

Preservation: Yes or No?

If you want to keep your gown in wearable condition beyond the first few years, preservation is the answer. Without it, wedding gown fabric oxidizes, perspiration stains set permanently, and fabric yellows. With it, a gown can remain stable for decades. Our preservation service at Margo West is available immediately following your wedding. The sooner preservation begins after the wedding, the better the results.
